Welcome...
.... to the first of our bi-monthly newsletters for all Careerforce apprentices for 2020.
We hope you’ve had a good start to the year and are getting into the swing of things.

In this issue, we share some tips on shaking off those remaining cobwebs to well and truly make headway in your apprenticeship programme in 2020, and how to make the most of your pastoral care meetings.

In ‘Nailing that Assessment’ section, we talk about ‘Be your own friend’ module. We think it’s one of the most important modules in the apprenticeship programme.

Get into the swing of things and smash your apprenticeship goals
The beginning of the year is timely for setting goals and intentions. No matter where you are in your apprenticeship journey, it is best to be working towards a goal. Here are some tips to smash those goals.

  1. Set realistic goals. Consider what is going on in your life right now and determine what is truly feasible for you to achieve.
  2. Make your goals trackable. For example, you may want to set target dates for completing each apprenticeship module. Having target dates makes you more motivated.
  3. Establish a routine and stick to it. Sometimes doing a little and often works better than trying to find a longer stretch of time to focus on your apprenticeship.
  4. Recognise when help is needed. Remember that you have colleagues, your manager/supervisor/assessor, fellow apprentices, and of course, your Careerforce Apprenticeship Advisor. It’s okay to ask for help, advice and guidance as you go through your apprenticeship.

Make the most of your pastoral care meeting
One of the best things about the apprenticeship model is having a dedicated Apprenticeship Advisor that provides you with pastoral care and support. They are there for you every step of the way so, we encourage you to make the most out of your time with them when you meet.

Are you prepared for your pastoral care meetings?
Ask yourself the following:
  • What is my objective or what do I want to get out of this meeting?
  • What support do I need from my apprenticeship advisor?
  • What module(s) / assessment(s) would I like to review with my apprenticeship advisor?
  • Where will we be meeting? Do I need to book a meeting room in my workplace?
  • What do I need to take to the meeting?
  • Do I have any questions/clarifications or any concerns to raise?

Nailing that Assessment
Nailing that Assessment is a regular section in our e-newsletters designed to help you do just that, nail that assessment.

APP108: Be your own friend
This module is about undertaking self-care. Self-care means activities and practices that reduce stress and maintain or enhance health and wellbeing. As part of your assessment, you will be asked to identify self-care strategies to implement over a number of weeks. You also need to provide evidence that you are implementing these strategies.

Nail this assessment by:
  • Selecting self-care strategies or activities that you are going to benefit from the most. This may just be an assessment, but these strategies are for you to carry on for your own health and wellbeing. Here are some suggestions of self-care activities.
  • Starting a diary to log the activities you do and when you do them. Write down about how you feel before and after the activity. You can use this as evidence for this assessment. You may use the self-care record template provided in Aka Toi.
  • Taking photos and videos along the way when you do the activities. You can use these as evidence for your assessment as well.
