Changes to the New Zealand Apprenticeship in Brain Injury Rehabilitation Support programme

Kia ora

We’re emailing you because you have one or more apprentices enrolled in the New Zealand Apprenticeship in Brain Injury Rehabilitation Support programme.

This programme has been updated to reflect changes to the qualification it leads to: the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 4) (Rehabilitation Assistance) Brain Injury Rehabilitation Support Strand.

As of 16 December 2022, any training agreements we receive for this programme are now being enrolled into version 2.

What are the key changes to the programme?

Version 2 of the programme includes the following changes:

  • The programme is now 124 credits (was 120).
  • One module has been removed: APP109 Be awesome.
  • Two modules have been added:
    • APP104b Impacts of colonisation on health and wellbeing.
    • APP104c Kaupapa Māori support services.
  • From early 2023, the titles of the core modules will be changing (see table below):
Updates to technical Brain Injury unit standards
As well as updated resources for the 8 technical Brain Injury modules, the titles of the unit standards that these modules lead to have changed:

US 26895: Describe the human brain, brain injuries and their classifications.
US 26887: Support rehabilitation for a person affected by brain injury.
US 26889: Support a person whose behaviour has been affected by brain injury.
US 26891: Support communication for a person affected by a brain injury.
US 26896: Support a person to manage fatigue after brain injury.
US 26890: Support a person physically affected by a brain injury.
US 26888: Support a person whose cognitive function has been affected by a brain injury.
US 26893: Support the psychological wellbeing of a person affected by a brain injury.

How do these changes affect currently enrolled apprentices?

Apprentices enrolled in version 1 of the programme will be awarded the qualification once they have completed all the requirements as per normal. All assessments must be marked and reported to NZQA by 31 December 2023. Therefore, apprentices will need to have assessments completed and submitted to Careerforce by 31 October 2023. Their Careerforce Apprenticeship Advisor will support them to prioritise completion of their programme.

We will also be communicating with current apprentices about their completion requirements.

Apprenticeship Boost Payments

Employers can continue to claim monthly payments of $500 per month, per eligible apprentice through to December 2023 via MSD.

Fees Free training eligibility

Newly enrolled apprentices may be eligible for fees free training. If they are first-time tertiary learners or their first tertiary education was covered by the (now expired) Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF), they may get their enrolment fees covered by the Government's Fees Free. More information is available on our website or at www.feesfree.govt.nz

If you have any questions about these changes, please don't hesitate to contact your Careerforce Apprenticeship Advisor.

Ngā mihi,
The team at Careerforce
