.... to your August newsletter, a bi-monthly newsletter for all Careerforce apprentices.

Raise your hand if you are as surprised that it’s already August! It has been quite a year and we commend you for continuing to do your best in your apprenticeship training while balancing many other responsibilities. We hope that no matter where you are in your apprenticeship programme, that you find something helpful in this newsletter.

In this issue we relay a message from your Apprenticeship Advisors and Assessors, ‘submit…submit…submit.’ We also put a spotlight on the It’s About Aotearoa module to help you start this assessment. For those just about to finish their apprenticeship and thinking about what’s next, check out the story of your fellow apprentice, James Tainui.

Submit...submit...submit!
Here’s a message from your Apprenticeship Advisors and Assessors – submit those completed tasks straight away. When you complete a task that you’re confident and happy with, don’t hold on to it and wait to complete all the tasks in that module. You are welcome to submit them as soon as you’re ready.  

What’s the benefit of doing this? According to your assessors:
  • You make it bite-sized for you and for them, so you receive feedback quicker.
  • You’ll know if you’re on the right track and can apply that in the subsequent tasks within the module.
  • You can then use the feedback to improve your future submissions.
  • Getting them right ultimately helps you achieve your qualification faster.

You know your stuff! You do the job every day. Your Advisors and Assessors are there to prompt you to think critically so you can improve your practice and help you focus on the things required to meet the requirements of your assessments.

Nailing that Assessment
This is a regular newsletter section to help you do just that, nail that assessment. In this issue we talk about the It’s About Aotearoa module and share a recent government initiative.
It’s About Aotearoa
In this module, you will be asked to outline key priority areas and contemporary initiatives for improving health and wellbeing of New Zealanders that are relevant to your sector, your role and the people that you support.
A PRIORITY is what we want to achieve. In answering the assessment, you also need to explain why it’s a priority. A paragraph explanation would suffice.
An INITIATIVE is the how we will address health and wellbeing priority areas. Contemporary initiatives can include any policies, strategies, plans, trials or emerging models produced by New Zealand government ministries, agencies and commissions, sector peak bodies or policy groups.
Here are some tips:
  • Many of these priorities and initiatives are already published online. Visit the website of the relevant ministry or sector peak body to get accurate information.
  • Look for both national and local priorities and initiatives.
  • Speak to your team members and managers to get some ideas and suggestions.





New Zealand Health and Disability System Review | Hauora Manaaki ki Aotearoa Whānui


To help get the ball rolling, we’d like to share with you the New Zealand Health and Disability System Review’s final report. The report discusses a range of proposals to improve the New Zealand health and disability system with the aim of producing more equitable and financially sustainable outcomes.

Free fees for apprenticeship programmes
In June 2020 the government announced the Targeted Training and Apprenticeships Fund (TTAF). The fund will remove costs for all Careerforce apprenticeship programmes for the next two and a half years until December 2022. If you are enjoying your programme, do recommend it to your colleagues. Now is a great time to enroll and upskill.

Apprenticeship Boost for employers
Now really is a great time to be an apprentice, or to start an apprenticeship. Not only have enrolment fees been waived via TTAF, the Government has also allocated $380.6m for an Apprenticeship Boost fund.
This fund allows all employers of active apprentices (existing and new) to claim a payment of $1000/mth for apprentices in their first year, and $500/month for apprentices in their second year.
More information can be found here – you may want to check in with your employer to ensure they are aware of Apprenticeship Boost. Payments are made to employers, and employers need to apply for payments via the Ministry for Social Development (MSD).

Changes to Apprenticeship Activity Requirements
You will have recently received an email from us outlining changes in activity requirements for all Careerforce Apprenticeships. that will result in an apprentice likely:
  • Being placed ‘on hold’ after five months with no modules completed and;
  • Being withdrawn from the apprenticeship after six months with no modules completed

In line with the Code of Good Practice, it is an expectation that all apprentices are actively progressing towards completion of their qualification, and regularly submitting assessments.

Careerforce apprenticeship programmes are all 120 credits (consisting of 13-15 learning and assessment modules), and with an expected duration of 18 months. Based on completion within this expected duration, apprentices should complete 4-5 modules over any six month period.

As an existing apprentice, this change will not affect your apprenticeship status unless you do not complete any apprenticeship modules over the next five months.

If you have any queries or concerns with these changes, we encourage you to discuss these with your employer, or with your Careerforce Apprenticeship Advisor or Assessor.

Meet one of your fellow apprentices
Pact’s Greymouth Community Support worker, James Tainui, helps support people to lead fulfilling lives in the community. Pact supports people with a variety of needs, such as people recovering from mental illness, having a physical or intellectual disability, or overcoming an alcohol and other drug or gambling addiction.

In his role, James supports these people.  He enjoys the little victories along the way.  “Yesterday we took two steps, but today we’ll take three. You see people change and grow and you see their mana enhance.  That’s what inspires me. Instilling that belief in people.”

After completing his apprenticeship, he continued to complete the NZ Diploma in Health and Wellbeing (Applied Practice). Check out his story and find out how he took his apprenticeship learning to the next level.

The Ministry of Health's app, Āwhina, puts important information in the hands of health workers. If you work in the Health sector, using Āwhina will ensure you and your teams receive critical Ministry of Health notifications about changes to COVID-19 information.

Āwhina, currently used by more than 11,000 people, lets you access information from the Ministry of Health and other trusted sources on your mobile device. You can save content in the app to give you quick access to it again later.
